Morning Glory

A Bsmart workshop

For this workshop we wanted to create an image that reflected swedish outdoor adventures with a Land Rover as a centre piece. The theme is two friends who set off early in the morning to go kayaking on the south east shores of Stockholm/Torö.

We shot a panoramic photo and a backplate at the beach. These images were then edited using traditional techniques in Photoshop. The car was added to the scene as a 3D-element. We didn’t have any kayaks at the photo shoot so those were also modelled in 3D and then rendered. When all the elements were in place we continued to tweak the environment in Photoshop to match the new CG lighting and we also added some more drama in the water.

The Lab – an introduction

Prepare to be Inspired

THE LAB is a unique place for our creatives to present their personal projects and experiments. Many of the ideas are presented here as sketches as they are still in the process of development. We hope that you find them both interesting and inspirational, perhaps even giving you an idea of how we could help you visualise your own projects. Take a look!

OMG – The ice cream shop

CGI/3D & Design workshop by Roger Sandberg and Martin Dickins

Rogers love for ice cream was the inspiration for this workshop. Every pixel and detail was built from scratch in this full CG visualisation that resulted in three final images.

BabyBjörn

Pitch by Bsmart

This baby carrier was modelled and digitally sculpted in ZBrush. Our goal was to present a 3D-solution for our client where it was possible to change colors and fabrics and animate the products as new models were being released.

Interior project – Lounge

Personal project by Roger Sandberg

A very good friend (Erik Grönlund, currently Graphic Designer at Blomquist) and I started this project for quite a while back. I was really interested in creating a CGI/3D interior but since my interior design skills are not particularly fantastic I was happy to have some help. The agreement was that Erik would decide on the concept, the kind of room, the furniture, the props and so on. For my part, I would create the entire interior in 3D and in a photorealistic way. In reality just designing the chair took forever so when I started to see the outcome of the room I began to put in some furniture and props of my own choice. This of course totally ruined my friends vision of the room. Luckily in the final image I believe that we both have elements that we are proud of although I was happy to have the final say for once. And yes, we are still friends.

Just in time for a photo shoot

Inhouse workshop by Johan Svensson and Karl-Fredrik von Hausswolff

Our vision here was an Audi turning up just in time for a photo shoot and skidding into the studio at the last second with no time to spare for a clean and polish makeover. The result was a combination of Johan’s expertise in 3D and Kalle’s experience in car photography.

“The lighting problems encountered in studio photography are also present in 3D lighting, but in 3D we actually have more control. We can determine what should be reflected or not, which would be physically impossible in traditional photography where everything is reflected”.

Simulation in Cinema4D

Personal project by Roger Sandberg

The main aim for this project was to test the simulation capabilities of the upgraded Cinema4D. Simulation was used for calculating of the movement of the olives onto and off the bottle. After some postwork, which involved playing the movie back and forth and adding motion blur and grading, I was quite pleased with the outcome.

The Cape Herb & Spice Company

Pitch by Roger Sandberg & Tomas Lestrup

A short animation and a couple of stills were easily set up to show the potential client the beauty and simplicity of using CGI/3D. So let’s see where the future takes us. Hopefully it will lead to a whole range of Herb & Spice 3D products some day soon.

Exploding Egg

Personal project by Johan Svensson

This project exploded into action with the goal to illustrate a highspeed motion. The rayfire plugin was used to calculate what happens when a bullet shoots through an egg. Realflow was then used to simulate the two different liquids, that is the egg yolk and the egg white. Finally the whole scene was rendered with Nextlimit Maxwell.

Jeep Cherokee at night

Personal project by Martin Brunn

My idea for this workshop was to create a studio style image of a car in an outside environment. By the time I had arranged 700 meters of cable extensions and set up a 36 square meter butterfly it was pitch black in the forest. Despite the pretty tricky circumstances the darkness worked to my advantage and I was able to capture the bewitching atmosphere that is seen here in the final image.

The Law of Attraction

Personal project by Philip Cederman

I have always wanted to try out and implement some painting into my work. I began by photographing myself and a friend and then I thought, ‘What more could I add to this image?’ I thought it would be fun to draw longer hair on my friends head which I did in pencil. It looked pretty good so I continued to paint all over the image. In the end the final image looked more like a painting than a photograph.

Return of the Bad Breath Monster

Personal project by Roger Sandberg

I was probably the only person feeling sorry for this weird looking character after watching the TV commercial. I therefore decided to give him/her a chewing gum (from Läkerol, which is Swedish of course) and loads of love. Now he/she is happier then ever!

RedBull on Ice

Personal project by Johan Svensson

This projects goal was to create a Red Bull can with realistic ice and lots of detail. The entire image is CGI, created with Cinema4D and Zbrush. The final rendering was made with Maxwell.
